Talk about a zombie thread!

I used to instruct at EGTR in that period and flew 'Tatty India' many times. I remember well the staff weather checks, in appalling weather to the Garston VOR, and back, with 4 up.

Think it was Ian Graham, Bob Hobson, Paddy Tighe, Bob Dickins, Don Andrews and myself that would take turns along with an unsuspecting student in tow at times too.

Totally unacceptable now but fun days then!

I initially thought the OP was referring to the sole turbine Chipmunk, but maybe that was 'GATTS not 'GATTI.

yes, G-ATTS:

IIRC, the engine was a Rover one. This, if so, is a bit ironic, since one reason for the delay between the E28/39 and the Meteor was that the production of 'Whittle-type' gas turbines was initially given to Rover cars, who could not cope; and only then given to RR, which was what started them in the jet business.

Just doing my log book and found the first one with tatty gatty at Olivemead farm( my first grass runway across the ridge and furrows!) and then RAF Hullavington 1984 to 1986 with many trips to bristol and the late Bill Townshend for 50 hr/60 day sign offs.
