Perhaps getting the Airporr Director, Rob Abbott (former ATCO) on to the livestream may be good value.
As you say, big bit of kit and reinvigorating controllers to work radar ain’t a cheap option.
Standby for more autonomous larger aircraft on test I reckon.

Will they get government grants I wonder?Well, to be fair, universities have very little of their own money to spend. Big purchases are normally paid for by someone else for them, and they have to justify it to those customers. They won't have just bought this out of their discretionary capital budget. It must be for either government or industry funded projects (or a combination of those two). I'm surprised it's not public knowledge- maybe it is, just not obvious. As I said before this isn't simply to provide an ATC service.

Roger that.
So as this new facility comes on line UK will move to the ICAO FIS model.
Any air traffickers formed a view how radar vectors in Class G airspace will work when not all targets are cooperating?

It's not difficult, but neither is it ideal. One just has to be on one's toes, and with continuous escape options.

From what I read elsewhere there seems to be a bit of uncertainty as to whether L3 will be providing pilot training for much longer too.
AlanM wrote:Perhaps getting the Airporr Director, Rob Abbott (former ATCO) on to the livestream may be good value. That sounds like a nice idea to get the airport director on the livestream. It would be interesting to hear about what direction the airport is going to go when they do have a radar service to offer. It would also be interesting to hear what the rest of the plans are on the future air park/Marshall development too.

The remote tower set up (which is very impressive) was also a ‘proof of concept’ idea, which ATC have subsequently benefitted from.
Interestingly, they announced they have bought Tower & Radar simulators yesterday, which are used to train controllers… https://www.linkedin.com/posts/micro-na ... QpafeW5ezM

Remote tower opens the possibility of a critical mass of resources to help with controller resource and workload. The risk as always is that idiot bean counters see it as just another cost reduction opportunity and we’re back to penny wise pound foolish again

You'd be right about research, although I don't *think* it's mainly drone related. At any time Cranfield University is managing £100m+ in research funding . A substantial amount of that will be in aerospace. A glance at the news section of the University website will show many big ticket projects, and for every one you can read about there will be at least one more who's funders didn't want publicity.
