A few minutes with a chain saw looks to me like it would sort the problem.
Someone at Popham needs to do a bit of polite begging/persuading and asking of the owner of the said tree if this can be done.

Given that one routinely has to fly a dog-leg on 26 to avoid the petrol station, and 08 for noise abatement, presumably anyone capable of not crashing at Popham could also avoid the tree.

It's really not a problem. Leave the tree alone!

Is it not open access? Not sure how that affects things? Public bodies very risk adverse. Surely any hint of a possible hazard/accident would persuade them to do something?

Leave it! 03 is downhill... Why destroy the poor (wo)man's ILS to the threshold? You line the tip up with the rough just before the runway, if the tip moves up the runway you need more power, if moves down to the 26 taxiway you need less power. At the moment you know you cannot hit the tree you convert to a glide approach, usually by lower the nose to drop into the pocket behind the wood, start to flair over previously mentioned rough, touch down in first 20 metres of 03 instead of over halfway down by those who use powerall.tbe way to the flare

The only ILS with a localiser that varies with the wind, and a glideslope that gets steeper every year.

That tree is dangerous and could compromise flight safety:

Cut the sentimental cr ap: cut it down........................

I can just imagine the headlines in the local paper if some poor sod flies into it and wipes himself out.

what would happen, if you clipped the tree, and ended up dumping your aeroplane on the road? (apart from a mess)

Who would be liable, the tree owner for allowing it to obstruct an airfield approach?

No, clearly it would be the pilot's AME, for not noticing the white stick.

Popham has a history of strange tree fellings. The great storm of 1987 hit Popham a day after everywhere else and loads of trees bordering what was runway 24 fell over

Failing that, ring barking would do it though very much more slowly. Not saying you should...but...you could.
