I frequently monitored light aircraft crossing to Calais/Le Touquet from Seaford, Lydd or Dover when operating Farnborough LARS East back in 2007/8; I used to suggest to the pilot that they could stay on frequency to the FIR Boundary.
Radar coverage was excellent with the 23cm radar from Pease Pottage (you could see as low as 400ft off Pevensey Bay) but was normally only required when Manston was operating its radar however when Manston wasn't operating, we could still see traffic
We had a direct line to D & D so if there was a problem, we could alert them immediately.
