A friend of mine (no, not me) is flying an RV7 from the US to Ireland. It only has 25kHz spacing. Ireland doesn't require 8.33kHz until 2024.

He doesn't want to add 8.33kHz equipment just for the flight from the Faeroes to Ireland.

What problems is he likely to face - just some grumbling?

8.33kHz is now required to communicate with all ground stations in the UK, except a handful such as 121.5.

Can anyone tell if you don't? Like if you have a 25kHz box and transmit on 122.60, for instance, when the new 8.33kHz one is 122.605?

I probably knew the answer to this at one time, but I seem to have forgotten the detail since I put my 8.33kHz Trigs in.

Possibly, possibly not, but AFAIAA he won't be able to receive or transmit on an 8.33kHz channel which doesn't map to a former 25kHz frequency.

Why doesn't he just buy/borrow an 8.33 capable handheld with a headset adaptor? Hardly a great incremental cost given the nature of the flight.

No it's not.
Stations on some frequencies with more than one transmitter have offset carriers outside the 8.33 bandwidth allowing them to operate on one frequency without co- channel inerference.
An example of this is 132.8 which you should be familiar with; it transmits from both Stansted and Luton. The other LARS frequencies, 125.250 and 123.225, are also 25 khz due to multiple trasnmitters.

From an ATC point of view, I am pretty sure that all ATC Centres have to keep non 8.33 comms for their task as some aircraft are still exempt. Whilst 125.2 became 125.205 we stil have 120.450 as a non-8.33 Zone freq. we get aircraft with exemptions occasionally - with Brest or London calling to see if we can accept the flight.

From a legal persepctive, I don’t know how you get an exemption from the regulator in question. (The last example I had was an old Antonov with STS/HUM).
