Sadly the Blackdown Hills in particular are littered with GA aircraft that either suffered LOC or CFIT flying in unsuitable or marginal weather. I live in the area where this happened and I cancelled a flight I was going to do yesterday as it was so awful round here.

It might be the case it was suitable for someone with an IR/IR(R) but AFAIK the pilot didn't have one.

There’s a full description elsewhere by a pilot who was in the air at the time and heard it unfold.

CFIT whilst in contact with Exeter radar and squawking 7700.

Had climbed to 7000’ and contacted Exeter radar “stuck in cloud”.

Given a height and vector to get them to Exeter.

Descended to 2600 as advised, but didn’t turn onto the heading.

I think they are the pertinent points.

What I don't understand is that the video on this news link appears to show an inverted aircraft with a roundel on the side. All the photos of the aircraft in the above link show a grey colour scheme.

Sad times whenever there’s a loss of life. RIP and condolences to friends and relatives.

I’m very new to flying but grew up in the area. I thought the same when I saw the sad news that I recall several light aircraft crashes in the area (and a Red Arrow IIRC). Interesting and thought provoking now to learn the potential reasons. I know from walking in the area that weather can turn in a heartbeat. Let’s hope that all can learn from such experiences and stay safe.

It's the Daily Express. What don't you understand?

I am guessing that's an FAA Sea Fury from a while back as one of the comments suggests. Nothing to do with this incident

Possibly because it looks like video footage from the Sea Fury forced landing back in May rather than anything to do with the accident in the accompanying text.
