Primarily for general aviation discussion, but other aviation topics are also welcome.

But it does voice alerts as well?

Most of the Flarm displays just give you "Alarm / Beep" type warnings. However some newer devices such as the LXNavigation Traffic monitor gives voice warnings as well https://www.lxnavigation.com/support/traffic-monitor/traffic-monitor or you can get a system like the Air Avionics TrafficView (which would be an alternative to the PowerFlarm Fusion) which has voice. LXNavigation used to sell an add on "voice module" but I'm not sure if that is still available.

Most glider installations get the voice warnings from the integrated Nav/Variometer system. Versions of these are made for power use (eg https://ul.lxnav.com/products/lx900/ or https://www.lxnavigation.com/aviation/navigation/ but I dont think they are certified.

The Flarm device range is quite wide - tailored to different types of use (gliding/power/rotary) from multiple different manufacturers. They have a page to help you (https://flarm.com/products/powerflarm/product-selector/) but if you are UK based a chat to either of the two main suppliers to the gliding world referenced in my earlier post is worthwhile......

Thanks, it was curiosity only, I don't see a screen display of traffic as being particularly useful without voice warnings, such as SD's 'intelligent' warnings.

We aren't in the market for EC kit, we already have ADSB-Out via our Trig GPS and BK Transponder and traffic alerts via PAw and Skydemon.

No problem, of course anyone with SD would just connect that to the PowerFlarm and get warnings that way.

Here is the (growing) list of stations, which fits nicely into the exciting catapult drones research project for the UK.

PilotAware

Rinicom Limited

SKY TECH Ltd
DART (Detect and avoid Augmented Reality Testing)

Snowdonia Aerospace LLP
Dragon’s Roar (“Rhuo Ddraig”)

SurveyAR Ltd
Autonomous Swarm Atmospheric Assessment Platform [ASAAP]

So Lee - does this mean we will see a bigger roll out of the ATOM Grid stations so that range becomes less of an issue? What's the future plans for the Grid based on this announcement?

I was interested to see the statement in the Cohort brochure (and the typo of CAP1391  ):

For drones there is an increasing need for onboard detect and avoid
technology to see, sense or detect conflicting traffic or other hazards
and subsequently take the appropriate action. Significant progress
over the past few years has been made in detecting UAVs present in
airspace, identifying them, and determining their existing flight path.
With electronic conspicuity (EC) information made available by
commercially available low-cost systems such as Flarm, PilotAware
and CAP139 (sic) Devices, this project makes greater use of this information
by developing an advanced collision avoidance algorithm capable
of determining and executing a variety of evasive manoeuvres
depending upon various levels of autonomy.

This seems to imply that the approach is a multi-protocol one, with ATOM being used as a point of integration? This seems a pragmatic approach given the current situation, but implies that those wishing for a standardised "one (EC) system/ring to rule them all" are going to be disappointed......

In a recent meeting with EASA and USSP entities discussing EC requirements within U-Space the notion of low power ADS-B was proposed.

It met with a round of disinterest

However, news they have commissioned a study into the GSM network as a platform using apps was widely welcomed by some.

I haven't a clue what ADB-B stands for; being pretty certain it is unconnected to the Asian Development Bank? Any chance of enlightenment?

Obviously not because that link takes me to plain, old-fashioned ADSB, not the ADB-B of which you spoke

I would wish. Anything else is just likely to lead to more 'head in cockpit' time which is not a Good Thing
