What indicators are used to determine if a military plane has been taken out of service and sold on for civilian use?

Is it mainly just the printing of the G-registration mark?

As it might not be particularly pleasant to be intercepted more often when flying overseas.

Ha!

Okay it's almost pretty obvious when flying something that's almost 100 years old, but how does one identify the ones that have recently been chucked out by the military?

I've encountered some ex-mil types that are so fast that we could be taking off at the same time and they could be landing at an airport on the Med or even doing something in Africa by the time I've coasted outbound over the channel.

Slight thread drift but allied to a previous post:
When operating with the UK's (Contracted Out - therefore civilian) Flight Inspection provider and staging through various Mil and Civ/mil aerodrome, we were sometimes subject to intense scrutiny by some authorities due to the plethora and positioning of the specialist flight Inspection antennas we had nailed to our aircraft.
