Primarily for general aviation discussion, but other aviation topics are also welcome.

The only shred of good news is that, before issuing the outline permission ,the Council has to refer it to the Secretary of State (Michael Gove) because it is viewed to be inappropriate development in the Green belt and over 1000SM in size. I believe the SoS can then choose to call in the application and may hold a public inquiry. Every effort right now needs to be focussed on getting the application called in. There would still be no guarantee of success but a least the decision making would be taken away from local politicians in Warwick District Council which is frankly ill equipped to deal with a proposal of this magnitude. I'm sure Grant Shapps could have some influence on the call in procedure.

Gove is opposing the closure of Fairoaks, which is in his constituency, where developers (initially supported by the Leader of the local authority) want to build a 'garden village'

Aiui, but happy to be corrected: Department of Transport made representation at the Consultation stage, as is on the record; therefore SoS (Shapps) may formally have no standing to influence his Cabinet colleague Gove directly, who should be considering only Planning issues. However, I suppose they could include national strategic planning issues which the local authority might be deemed not properly to have considered.

On this day in history......

16th January 1930

Frank Whittle submitted his first patent for a jet engine (British Patent No. 347,206 - granted in 1932).
His first engine was running by April 1937.
Whittle was born at Earlsdon, a suburb of Coventry.

To all the future aerospace engineers at Coventry University today.....oops!

Indeed, PM and MP very keen mentioning 6000 jobs and billions contributed to the local economy.
GA will never match that locally but, as a whole, GA contributes billions to the UK economy and creates thousands of skilled jobs.
Is GA doomed to become a cottage industry so that, in years to come, the BBC (or whatever is left of that corporation) will be making a programme similar to the Repair Shop showing 90 year old pilots and engineers repairing 90 year old aeroplanes on The Farmer's latest airstrip....?

Any modern 'Giga factory' will be so highly automated for efficiency and for health and safety that I'd be surprised if it required a quater of that.
The specialist skills and technology to create it will probably be brought in from overseas.
Brilliant, spectacular benefit for the locals, not.

When proponents of schemes like this mention "n,000 jobs" it is usual that n includes everything from the person who empties the wastepaper basket at the architects, the groundworkers, the construction crew and the signwriter who paints the board at the gate. Plus a mythical "local supply chain" such as the lithium mine outside Kenilworth.

So many critical airfields have either closed, are being run-down or are under threat. "New airfield" is practically an oxymoron. Flying clubs, the maintenance organisations, the instructors, the insurance companies, we pilots, everyone in the community is going to lose out. I hope the day will never come, but eventually critical mass will be lost, the industry will collapse and perhaps, if we’re lucky, we can look forward to a 10-mile jaunt in a pilotless taxi-copter.

I hope those responsible for demise of Coventry, should it eventually happen, find themselves persona non-grata throughout what is left of the GA network until the day they finally discover there’s more reward in supporting and contributing to our community, than their big pile of money can ever give them.
