Hi everyone, for those of you using or interested in the Garmin Pilot iOS app, we’ve been working hard to help make NOTAMs easier to understand and relate to. We introduced these NOTAM and other updates late last year in v10.3 and we’ve recently made some additional updates in both v10.3.4 and v10.4. I’ve summarized all of these updates below.

Graphical Airspace and Obstacle NOTAMs

Image

Airspace and Obstacle NOTAMs are dynamically drawn on the moving map page. Airspace NOTAMs use the colors below to help easily identify and interpret the NOTAM at-a-glance, like the METAR flags. Obstacle NOTAMs are displayed using the same symbols for obstacles but are colored pink to easily call attention to the notice of a NOTAM associated with that obstacle. NOTAMs that will become active in the future are outline in yellow on the moving map. This outlook can be filtered to display NOTAMs becoming active anywhere between 3 and 48 hours in the future.

Red: Restricted and Danger NOTAMs, such as Prohibited Areas
Orange: Alert and Warning NOTAMs, including Military Operation Areas (MOA)
Gray: Flight Data Center (FDC) NOTAMS and Restricted Area Deactivated NOTAMs
Purple: Other NOTAMs such as Parachute Jumping and Glider areas

NAVAID NOTAMs

Image

Pilots can view the status of NAVAID NOTAMs on the dynamic moving map page as well as with the VFR sectional/IFR enroute chart layer selected. For example, when a NAVAID like a VOR is currently out of service, it is outlined in red. If outlined in orange, it indicates a limitation, for example, that it is not monitored. The NOTAMs are interactive using the radial menu to discover more information about them.

Smart Airspace™ and NOTAM Filter

Image

Garmin Pilot helps simplify the moving map page while planning and flying in complex and dense airspace environments like those found in Europe. Smart Airspace and NOTAM filter options allow the pilot to de-emphasize and/or hide these features based on the planned or in-flight altitude. The left screen is unfiltered and the right screen is filtered to hide airspace that is not applicable to the aircraft’s current in-flight altitude. Easily filter NOTAMs that may not be pertinent to your operation by hiding Obstacle, NAVAID and/or UAS NOTAMs.

Aerodrome NOTAMs

In the airports page, the team has decoded airport NOTAMs so they’re easier to interpret. One of my favorite features is how quickly it highlights information that I really want to be aware of. In the example above, you’ll see highlighted key words that catch your attention like ‘Out of Service’.

NOTAM Access
NOTAM information is cached while connected to the internet for access later while in-flight without an internet connection.

Modern Flight Briefing

For European operators, a new, modern Briefing Pack is available when filing your flight plan using the Garmin VFR filing service.

Quickly add or remove overlays with a new quick access bar at the top. The new bar allows quick overlay of ceilings, PIREPS, winds, airspace and more with a tap of the icon.

Flight Simulation
Garmin Pilot supports simulation using X-Plane today. This update adds compatibility with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020.

For those that have not yet received this update automatically, you can access it by visiting the App store on your iPad or iPhone and visit the Garmin Pilot page by searching for it in the store. Once on the page, you’ll find an ‘Update’ button next to the Garmin Pilot icon. Touching that will update your application.

For those that are not using Garmin Pilot today, I encourage you to give it a try with a 30-day free trial upon download from the Apple App store.

For Android users, the team is working hard to bring similar NOTAM features to you by late Summer.

Let us know what you think!
