Am I correct in believing that regulations require that registration lettering on the wing undersurface should read inwards from the tip?

Registration go under port wing.

So you end up with the "G-" near the fuselage.

As an aside, an underwing registration is not required under FAA regulations.

"The tops of the letters shall be towards the leading edge of the wing";
So that, to me, means that the reg should read inwards from the wing tip....or am I going around the bend?

Of course you new aircraft might be a biplane or triplane with a small wingspan and you would put the registration across both wings and in this case the first half would read inwards.

Or you could be speaking about a non-part 21 glider in which case the only registration is the BGA trigraph which goes under the starboard wing (top of letter to leading edge) and so reads inward

Regulations seem logical to me when you look up at an approaching aircraft registration reads left to right so top of letters at leading edge

Underwing lettering looks unsightly and everyone on ground can read your registration - I wouldn't.
