I have been thinking for a while, as a brit pilot living in Spain for over 2 years, there is a big gap with no GA airport in the area which provide a good service to pilots from around the world to come and benefit from the amazing weather, views and close proximity to Gibraltar, Portugal and Morocco.

My question is if people would be interested in a facility like that, a flying club, perhaps English speaking flying school with a decent runway and good service for expats and other global communities. I live in Marbella and I would be interested in such a project provided there is enough interest out there.

There would seem to be a need for another airport in that area. Malaga is, allegedly, vastly oversubscribed and they use that to justify their high fees. Although it has never seemed that busy when we have flown there. I think parking is the thing - provide decent parking for anything up to 5.7MT and you should have a nice little earner.
Presumably the Spanish authorities see no need for more airports, or they would have a few more?

I used to fly with the Aeroclub at Malaga international, they flew mainly C172s from the GA/bizjet terminal many years ago.

They moved out to a private site to the East of Malaga - Aeródromo de La Axarquía.

There’s a lack of fields in the area and I don’t think the private site has done very well over the last few years.

(Last time I flew from Malaga the GA landing fee I paid was less than 20 Euro!)

Go for it, something like flyGlide109 at Murcia would be fun, bunch of owners who fly microlights, motor-gliders and diamonds and know everything about sailing & wine !

Malaga is indeed busy, so busy one will pay 210Euros and have to wait to get escorted then get send to the wrong offices or aircraft stands  i think only Almeria (50€ swissport) & Jerez (40€) are left as convenient airports in southern Spain for flying to North Africa or Gib (via Morocco ofc 8) ), but at 3E-4E/L fuel prices and 300E handling one is better off doing customs & fuel via Perpignan

It must be 10-15 years ago now, but I used to only pay less than €20 for the landing fee at Malaga!

Most of my flights were local as there wasn’t much option to land at other places.

I only landed away at Tangiers and Almeria, many flights were just along the coast.

Would be great to have something near Marbella.

The last time I was at Malaga Airport it was to meet someone on a domestic flight from Barcelona .. in an Iberia DC-3. There was a squadron of Air Force CASA 352s (Ju-52) there. We were staying in a newish 4-story hotel which towered over the adjacent small fishing village called Torremolinos.

Has it changed much ?

It wasn't that long ago ;) ...but longer than I thought!

I used to regularly fly from Malaga international, but my last flight there was actually way back in April 2006.

After that, the flying club moved to Axarquia but I only flew from there once in October 2007.

It wasn't as easy to get to and the airfield had a power cable over/near the end of the runway IIRC, which meant a displaced threshold!
