The rationale behind face mask wearing is to protect others from you by absorbing potentially virus-infested droplets that you breathe out. Those clear face shields do nothing to protect others, they are a complete sham.

The other day I saw someone in the queue to board an aircraft wearing one of these, other than maybe flouting the guidance WTF use is that for protecting anyone, I was surprised the airline allowed it.

Worryingly, these type of “masks” were common amongst staff in the hospitality sector. I was served in several restaurants by staff wearing them.

But as many people are not wearing facemasks correctly or at all, maybe the rationale of people trying to protect themselves (the old, the infirm) is to wear an FFP3 mask. Most of those are valved.
I have been in a room where others did not wear masks. In that situation, am I wrong to wear a mask to protect myself, valved or not?

If you can get an FFP3 mask and have it properly fit tested, it will help protect you to an extent. An FFP3 mask that doesn't fit properly - and lots of people don't fit certain masks - is no better than a cloth covering or standard mask.

In healthcare settings we only wear them generally when expecting aerosols of covid, not for routine patient care even of covid patients unless they're coughing a lot, so I wouldn't wear one in any public setting myself.

I am happy to see supermarkets saying they'll clamp down on mask wear, but I suspect this will lead to people with no reason to be exempt claiming to be, even more so than now.

Those inverted clear masks look a bit disturbing and "specialist". Government advice is that face shields must not be worn instead of masks or coverings.

The recommendation is to use surgical masks, or approved reusable cloth masks, which should display their certification standard depending on whether they were produced in Europe (EN14682), the US (ASTM F2100-19, level 1, 2 and 3) or in China (YY 0469-2011).

UK has the highest death rate in the world at the moment, and the highest incidence rate of a significantly more contagious new variant of the virus. The French public health authorities suggest that people use a mask which prevents transmission rather than a fabric mask which doesn’t. It’s not difficult, but it’s boringly predictable who will know best and disagree.

Discarded surgical masks have become the new fag butts and microplastics. Mandating CE marked reusable masks will result in sky high prices as the usual vultures cash in adding to the poverty of many many families. Makes you wonder if the cure is worse than the disease.....
