My reference is Pooley’s flip style checklist for the PA 28.

From the OP:
During this Lockdown 2 re reading 'Be A Better Pilot' by Alan Bramson', in a section on power checks and specifically mag checks, this got my attention.
"You are not looking for an RPM drop at this stage (although many pilots mistakenly do) but if a magneto is not working there is little point in taxiing out"

He seems to be implying that you're really only checking there's no mag dead cut.

As the “Be A Better Pilot’ reference implies, my understanding is, at this stage you are looking for absence of a dead cut when selecting L & R.

As ‘As I CFIT’ implies, the manufacturer need not mandate everything in their POH that could be considered ‘best practice’?

A useful link?

As this post came up in google search while I was looking for info on this item I have acquired, I thought this would be the right place to ask about it. I have found books online by Alan Bramson but no physical instrument boards like this one. I usually have an easy time researching items I acquire via house clearances and auction houses etc... but I can't find any info at all on this. Was it something you would have purchased alongside the books he published? How old is it? Any info would be great, thank you

I've found more information. I will leave it here so hopefully, it will embed itself into google for future searches.

My Emeraude has two toggle switches and a push button start.
1. Mags both off press start. If it starts I have a live mag.
2, Both on press start. Once running at temp, normal mag check, no drop no go, and I know which one.
Shut down by switches. If it doesn’t, use idle cutoff or turn the tap off and wait five minutes.
Can’t be done with a key switch, sorry.

It can in a Grumman, as they have a push button and a key switch without the ‘start’ position.

You don’t start on ‘both’ though.
