and hopefully finally, for the distant future....
for revalidating your microlight rating in about 2 years time, your hours and to&l will count over the full 2 years, and you need 12 of which at least 8 as p1, and for normal flying (there is a get out for single seat aircraft), at least one hour must be training. However at least 6 of the hours (doesn't matter which, p1 or training) must be in the final 12 months. So you cannot do all the hours in the first 12 months, there must be 6 of them of some sort in the final 12 months.
Then, if you eventually have an SEP rating in a UK (non easa) ppl as well, then only the final year of SEP or microlight hours will count to SEP revalidation. SO if you eventually had both ratings, and you had 8 hours p1 microlight in the first 12 months, and 4 hours microlight in the second 12 months of its validity, including 12 to&l landings in the whole period, and one (minimum) of the hours was a training hour (it could be at any time, but for the purposes of the coming point, let's say it is in the 4 hours in the 2nd year and the rest was p1), you could revalidate the microlight rating.
Then if you looked at the SEP rating validity expiry date (which would probably be different), IF you had exactly the same split of hours running up to SEP revalidation, then normally you could use all the microlight flying, BUT you would be told you didn't have enough for an sep rating revalidation.... as only the final 12 months count for SEP revalidation, so your total of hours in the final year (SEP or microlight) would be 4.
In both cases, once you had the correct history, you can get the revalidation signature for the rating for 2 years beyond current expiry as soon as you have completed the task, you do not have to wait for the final 3 months of rating life as some will tell you.
