I think that was yesterday, not today.

Well done that pilot, and what a pity abut the damage. I do hope it's repairable. I had a look at that aircraft at Shobdon a little while ago and it was lovely.

Which is more than can be said of the English language in this journo's desperate attempt to be gender neutral!
Anyway, Id have said the pilot undid the straps and got out - no freeing needed

What should the writer write if he/she was unsure of the gender of the pilot?

The journalist should have journalised, and found out.

After all, they'd managed to determine that the pilot was uninjured so presumably weren't just guessing.
