Maybe the latest small update, but suddenly live weather is functioning (though it must be said the MSFS weather for East Anglia right now is marginally nicer than it appears out of my window)

According to a mate that knows about these things, apparently the Nvidia 3070 cards are out soon, and will blow the 2080Ti out of the water.

Not only that, but FS2020 is allegedly going to support VR on the HP Reverb G2, which is 2160x2160 pixels per eye, with inside out tracking.

Any guesses what's going to be on my Xmas present list?

Whilst that might be true I'm running it on a 1060, and the frame rate and detail are fine.

I'm running an MSI Monitor with a resolution of 5120 x 2160 @ 60Hz refresh on ultra settings with a few tweaks and it blows me away - this with a GTX 2070 card. I'm skeptical whether a 3070 would be worthwhile or just a waste of cash.....

What I did note was the performance gained by moving from 16GB to 32GB RAM; I was told that with 16GB RAM, the system would only utilise max 4 cores hence I'd be missing out on the performance of the 8 cores my Ryzen 3700DX.....

However I'm waiting for FS2020 to support the Oculus Quest connected via USB-C to become a slightly better Rift S..... Oh, and waiting for the Honeycomb Bravo quadrant to be delivered...... my early christmas present to myself.....

Hopefully on that front you don't know something I don't

NVIDIA 3070 series cards are being released tomorrow - Thursday Oct 29th.

I believe they launch, for sale, at 14:00 UK time.

The more expensive 3080 and 3090 cards are already out, but you'd be lucky to get a 3080 by January/February even if pre-paid and pre-purchased.

Indeed... in reality although I may get FS2020 in the near future, much as I'm eyeing up all the shiny, it'll be the new year before I go for new GFX or VR.

i'm still seeing quite a few people (on "another forum) say its not as good as xplane for IFR (flight model) and avionics (interacting with the panel). Any reports?

I'm not sure why you would want to use it for IFR if this means you miss all the lovely (and pretty accurate) eye-candy scenery. I am sure X=Plane is as good or better for this, other than for a cloud break with the runway appearing ahead of you.

MSFS2020 really is strongest on VFR, fairly low level, in exotic parts of the world.

If you're looking for IR or IR(R) practice, then FS2020 is OK, but given the limited help, it can be a fiddle to work out how to set intruments. On many of the SEPs there isn't a complete set of instruments. My experience of IFR flight on FS2020 is limited mainly to the C172 with trad steam punk instruments.

ADFs generally can be set only to whole numberes of kHz, and won't detect NDBs with 0.5 offset, which rules out many UK NDBs. I can't make DMEs show 0.1 miles either - just shows whole miles on the C172.

Not really tried the G1000 C172 because I don't know how to work it (and again, no help in FS, and not easy to use the Garmin documentation as that doesn't really help you to work the FS version with a keyboard and mouse). And I can't be bothered, as I want it for practice for a steam dial plane!

But if anyone knows a good G1000 guide for FS2020 I'd love to hear about it!

There are other irritations as the FS designers don't really understand how human vision light adaptation works, and the instrument panel is uber-dim unless you turn up the panel lighting every time you run it.

But given those relatively minor irritations, yes it's fine for instrument practice! Although as Rob says, FS2020 is really designed for VFR, for which it's superb.

I mostly fly MSFS in exterior camera mode so I see the aircraft and the ground. The few times I have flown with the interior view the panel works exactly as in reality, look out the window and you effectively don't see it, pan down to look at the instruments and they brighten up.

You can't get away with watching outside and the instruments simultaneously pretty much how your eyes work.

The instrument panel in a plane is of course much darker than the world outside. But we don't see that (or at least, I don't). When I glance down, my eyes adapt instantly and the instrument panel is readable. But when I run FS2020, in normal view with both the outside world and the panel in view at once, without turning up the panel illumination, the panel is very dark. From my knowledge of human vision and perception, I don't think that's how our eyes work. I don't need to use a torch to read the instrument panel in daylight, but that's what you have to do in FS2020.

I shouldn't have to switch between outside view and panel view to make the panel brighten up.

Why do you have to switch between views?

Can't you just pan (glance) down?
