I'd second the point about choose the syndicate at least as much as the aircraft.

On availability - a lot comes down to the others in the syndicate. I'm in two syndicates: never had an availability issue with one of them .... the other is far more of a problem, simply because Friday is my non-working day/flying day, and one other syndicate member also liked doing an hour of aeros every Friday lunchtime.
