Primarily for general aviation discussion, but other aviation topics are also welcome.

AFA- Amateur Flying Association
(being as they abandoned "Popular Flying Association" which did exactly what it said on the tin.....but, no, someone with delusions of grandeur and snob-appeal decided to fritter members' money on a gratuitous re-branding to "LAA"

To defuse any notion of elitism, I refrained from suggesting "AAA" -Amateur Aviation Association.

Amazing the difference in perception a single word can make!

Is this the opinion of someone with intimate knowledge of the reasons for name change and the personalities involved, but whose money was not frittered away, because he never supported the association under any name?

^^^^^^ got me bang-to-rights, Donald.-Perhaps you'd care to educate me, as to why these changes happened, making this particular individual shy-away from joining the association?
AIUI, most such mutual organisations strive to increase membership, not repel potential recruits.

“Popular flying association” smacked of “Popular mechanics”, people playing with model trains etc.
“Amateur” anything would have people thinking we were numpties chucking things together from car scrapyards.
“Non Commercial aviation” should cover everyone but anything with “Non” in it would have the public thinking something was lacking. Rather like “Uncontrolled airfield” is a free for all bun fight for loopy loonies to do their thing.
“British General Aviation Council”. Might work, being a “Council” might reassure the public.

The last thing needed is words like “recreational,“ “amateur,” “ leisure,” “hobby,” etc.

More than enough people already regard GA as a bunch of rich playboys indulging in an unnecessary and expensive environmentally unacceptable pastime.
