I'm inclined to agree. It's not that unlikely that someone could land on a benign day, with not too much wind more or less straight down the runway if they were being talked through every moment of it.

What would be the motives for a flight school to fake such a thing? I'd have thought the last thing they want is for prospective students to be worrying about instructors passing out.

Not quite sure how they got him back to the airport, but it's not all that unfeasible if they could get QDMs from his transmissions.
