Thanks - turns out the engine had cracked #1 cylinder from which oil was escaping and thus the smoke and misfiring. Engineer reckons prompt removal of power avoided further damage and engine seizure so, together with no injury to pilot or damage to airframe, it's not a bad result ;-)
