For ground station use to display traffic on a screen, or for airborne traffic awareness use?

Almost all ADS-B receivers operate on 1090MHz (aka Mode S Extended Squitter), which is a worldwide standard. A small number only operate on 978MHz (aka UAT) which is only officially supported in the USA at this time as a solution to the frequency congestion problems on 1090MHz. The data format on both frequencies is ADS-B and is virtually identical, hence making a dual-band unit is (comparatively speaking) "easy".

It is a different situation when talking about transmitters, however, as a number of products are available for the US market which only transmit in 978MHz/UAT.

Edited to fix typo

is I think: 'as a solution to the frequency congestion problems'

Stick in the aerial jalopy to work as a received to display traffic on SD.

The popular ADS/B receivers in Europe are SkyEcho, PilotAware and PowerFlarm.

There are others such as iLevil and Stratux.

Scout/Sentry will not work with SkyDemon as they're Foreflight products, actually manufactured by uAvionix.

We have a group member who has had a go with Stratux, not greatly impressed at this point, not sure why....

The Garmin GTX345 transponder both receives and transmits ADS-B on both 1090 and UAT frequencies - simultaneously if required

Anyone experience with Stratux?

Yes, it works well in the US where there's the 978 traffic rebroadcast.

It works here but is limited in that it only receives ADS-B (1090). If you don't care about the official case, you can put a single band one together for about £50. If you want the official case and want dual band then it's about £75, or more if you want the new low power receivers (though the new low power UAT receiver won't do Flarm, it's 978 only).

I have never tried the Flarm version, as I understand it, it's some sort of code overlay on top of an older version of the Stratux software. Not sure how happy Flarm would be for people to be decoding it for free in the air, and of course Flarm change their code every year or so, so it would then have to be re-hacked.

PilotAware is also based on a Raspberry Pi, does pretty much what the Stratux does and obviously also receives P3i, and the rebroadcast stuff in the UK. Nothing stopping you setting up rebroadcast stations across Europe though! ;-)

Possibly because there aren't that many puddle jumpers broadcasting ADS-B at the moment.
