While the prices of the kits are clear on the Vans website, can I ask what other costs you had in getting the kit? Presume VAT on all at 20%, plus delivery? Any others? Thanks .

Cost of kit in $ so there is a currency conversion charge.

Use a credit card that has the best currency conversion rate I managed with a bit of negotiation to get the spot rate on the day of sale. Due to the amount.

Shipping cost was about $500.00. By the time you add on the collection from Vans to the shippers then delivery to my home from the shippers this end, Customs admin fee, paperwork charges, insurance, and a few other things that you get billed for the door to door fee was $1922.00

There was a sneaky charge for use of their deferment account. But I figured that as this was a one off shipment so I just paid it.

Vans put a customs code on the paperwork for you so you don't pay duty.

VAT to the shippers plus their costs as above, the moment the boxes are unloaded in the UK.

To be fair I went with Vans suggestion OIA Global and it was painless.

You could do it cheaper yourself, but do you want the hassle if something goes wrong, and your pride and joy is left somewhere on Southampton Docks in December.

Sadly, my thread (where I stupidly mentioned I was away that night) resulted in a break in at the home farm and a machinery heist took place.

I didn’t realise until now that those types watch these forums.

As a result I’ve invested a 5 figure sum in security with auto-police monitoring/notifications, 7 camera movement sensor notification CCTV, three hungry dogs and a separate special treat for any other unwanted visitors.

The oats are fine thanks.

So a bit of an update for those that are interested.

The local Farmer, not 'The Farmer' helped with his telehandler ( a forklift with attitude). Which is a great bit of kit and the perfect tool for unloading stuff.



He still thinks I'm a bit mad, but a couple bottles of Claret and he even offered to help scrap it when I finally go fully 'Radio Rental'.


It all arrives in a mass of highly packed boxes. I swear the bloke/girl that packs them must have a masters in Compression Engineering or similar.

First thing is to take everything out and inventory it.



That said you count every nut/bolt/washer/rivet/bit of aluminium etc. Vans give you a month to do this, easy, I thought. Took 14 days



As you can imagine this is a bit mind bending and very dull!
However you do get to look at everything. The best bits are in the finish kit which has wheels,tyres, brakes etc. When you start looking at 10 bits of small ( size of a box of matches small) aluminium with 8 random holes in them you start to think about the logic of the £30k+ that you have parted with, and your general sanity.

Now the next stage is to put most of it back in the boxes that it came out of.
Well if you've bought anything from IKEA that had to go back, you'll know exactly how easy this is!



What you do have left over is about 2 cubic meters of paper and packing, which because we are good citizens, goes to the recycle center and is not used to light the garden bonfire.



Well I'm not going into the finer points of the build: Finding the bits, getting rid of the blue sticky stuff, cleaning, priming, assembling, match drilling, cleecos, taking it apart, putting it back together again, riveting and the such like.

But being me, I've had a bit of a start.





So if anyone is interested I'll post from time to time.
If no ones interested just let me know too!

Please keep posting updates. I have half a plan to follow in your footsteps in a few years time so all very interesting.

It is interesting, and totally daunting.

The above has confirmed me in my decision to buy a ready-built, even if not exactly to my liking, example.
