CB IR Study Materials

Unless I'm mistaken, a lot of the online questions banks and even the training materials for the CB IR (I am using CATS for example) now don't marry up with the new issue of the the Jeppessen charts provided in the student manual.

Is there any way of confirming if the numbering system has changed> e.g. i've had a couple of questions which refer to E HI 2 CAA whereas this isn't in the new Jeppessen manual (just the Jeppesen E HI 4 which covers a different area). Or where the question tells you to look at E LO 2 whereas the specified navaid isnt on the chart but on E LO4. Or where it asks you to look at the Paris charts - which arent in the new manual!

The new maps haven’t been in use long. I don’t think the QBs have had time to catch up as yet.

Yeah - if I’m correct then massive caveat to people signing up to the question banks.

My bigger issue is with the ATO. You have to pass their online tests before you can sit a real exam but their questions banks are out of date too. Will be ringing tomrrow to see what the say - must affect CPL and ATPL too!

With cats when you are taking the test, you get all required materials on the right hand side (similiar with other question banks), cats question bank seems to be very old so i didn't pay too much attention to it (if i failed required test i would just do it again based on correct answers they have given) never bothered to get 100% or anything.
I did most of my revision using https://www.aviationexam.com/ question bank (which seems to be the most up to date QB) but i did try to actual understand the material (so i would do a test, and then read about things i wasn't sure about while doing the test).

I have exact same combo - cats and Aviation exam.

Both are out of date now.

The cats attachments are just about ok for approach plates though you’re learning plates that won’t be in the exam.
The enroute charts are unreadable though.

The Jepp Binder stuff was long overdue for a change When I did my IR. TK at CATS ten years ago when they were still at Cranfield : the Jepp fullATPL manual/charts were over 15 years old then.

Lots of people are failing FP at the moment. The maps are quite different. But some report most questions come from very few of the new maps. Are you on FB? There are groups that can help with feedback.

@marioair atpl theory students

Obviously not aimed at us hobby pilots but it’s quite helpful as far as I’m concerned.

To make things worse the CBIR exam for FP is 40 minutes and 27 questions giving you less that 90 secs per question. And ignore the guff that you don’t need to learn stuff about jets. You do.

It’s the exam where I’m genuinely worried about time! The killer for me is locating lat/longs. Practice practice!

The ato guidance and EASA learning objectives both say no need to learn jet stuff. If it comes up in the exam can’t the be appealed?

Too true: One of our group ran out of time on this paper and failed: I think he raised an official complaint.

IIRC he had one 'jet stuff' question.

He got it next time.

I failed the FP exam first time. Took it weeks after the new maps came into force so all my learning was on the old ones. I had not spent any time looking over the new ones really. I found it very difficult to find the last and long quickl for instance. I just ran out of time.

Hopefully will do better next time.

Yes I am going to appeal on both counts. Time and syllabus. Very frustrating.

I can see grounds to appeal on being asked a question not on syllabus.

The timing is harder though to appeal? Let me know how it goes!
