Being up and awake at 4:20am, I heard a large sounding turboprop approaching. What be that, thought I? Well, I fired up FR24, and it turns out it's a Ukraine Air Alliance AN12 (January 1963), going from Shannon to Istanbul. Quite a distance, 3152km great circle.

It went directly over.

Ashley Vinning wrote:The AN-12 ... Locals 'enthusiasts' have dubbed it the 'Coal-Burner'.

.. but the COALER is the An-72 :)

[Antonov are, of course, proudly Ukrainian, not Russian. The AN-24/26/32 (COKE/CURL/CLINE), always an impressive airframe, has been relaunched as the AN-132, with modern Western systems; including, of course, Gloucestershire (Dowty) propellers :thumright: Their visiting engineers sometimes call in on JAM :) ]

It's only recently I found where that image comes from. "Lord of War", a 2005 movie with that most understated of subtle actors. Yes, it's Nicolas Cage.
