On return, I asked CFI if I would have the hire rebated in any way for the greater distance and higher landing fee than at Ipswich to achieve the same Exercise: no ]

Well that was the charge for the extra lesson - always ask BEFORE you do the favour, and say no if you do not get a deal!

If you are looking to buy and rent out an option now is to buy a permit aircraft, get something interesting and you will be able to rent it out at a lower rate than the more boring Cessnas and Pipers and still make a better profit.
1. Certain LAA aircraft may be hired out to third parties, provided the following conditions and processes are followed.
2. Aircraft put forward for hiring out must be accompanied by suitable pilot notes. In particular, descriptions of how the engine, fuel and electrical systems operate are important, as well as any feature unique to the aircraft. The pilot notes must be given an issue number and date.
