I do not see what the problem is with the current syllabus, learning nav with maps, plogs, wind calculations etc teaches you the underlying principles. This is not only useful if your gps unit(s) are unavailable, and I include getting your location via a couple of VORs as well as navigating home, but if you understand the principles you should understand the basics of a moving map GPS.

Basically learning the existing way gives you more knowledge than you will use in real life most of the time, and gives you a deeper understanding of the tech you decide to use. I would rather it be that way round. I wonder how many younger people could 'operate' a real map after driving all their lives with a satnav?
