But which wasn't in the authoritative source, the AIP, posted even earlier...

It's worth drawing attention to the apparent fact that you need to submit it inbound AND outbound.

The AIP is clear. Calais VAC calls for PN 2HR before ETA.

At airfields without a permanent Customs presence PN is always required for arrivals and departures. The default notice period is 24HR.

ENR 1.1.5
Pursuant to Regulation (EU) No. 2016/399, the Decree of 24 October 2017 on the crossing of frontiers by persons and goods at aerodromes specifies that, for any direct flights from or to a State or territory not belonging to the Schengen area shall only be carried out at or from an aerodrome which has the status of a Border Crossing Point (PPF) and during the opening hours of the service responsible for border control. The list of aerodromes is available on the website of the SIA (Part GEN 1.3 of the AIP). Please refer to the TXT

The forms are new and designed to comply with this decree https://www.legifrance.gouv.fr/eli/arrete/2017/10/24/TRAA1723247A/jo/texte A simple email with the relevant details is still acceptable.

PW - thank you, that background is really useful.

My complaint about the SIA entry was that the web link given there,

http://aeroport.capcalaisis.fr/en/forms/customs-form

returns

Désolé, la page que vous essayez de voir n'existe pas.
Il semble que ceci soir la conséquence, soit de :

une adresse mail mal saisie
un lien obsolète

To the uninitiated, every airfield in France (and probably in Britain too, but I don't care about that) has a different method of summoning les douaniers, and when the official publication is wrong one loses confidence that one has done it properly. Having once been greeted at Deauville by uniformed chaps waving pistols perhaps i am a little oversensitive.

Matthew,

Hopefully, Alex will read your post and arrange for the Calais VAC to be updated. Not everyone checks the airport website before planning a trip, and being unable to gine PN to Customs could result in pilots deciding to go elsewhere.

I just called Calais and found it's even better for helicopters; the landing fee is reduced by 50% as we don't make use of the runway - that's fantastic. €5 landing fee for an R44.

I've often fly into Le Touquet, but if I then proceed elsewhere after customs to land at a private site (chateau/hotel/restaurant) that €30 fees both in and out; so an extra €60. Will definitely make Calais my entry, if I'm not specifically visiting Le Touquet.

Alex,

Most British pilots go to the AIP for information, not the airport website.

https://www.sia.aviation-civile.gouv.fr/dvd/eAIP_13_SEP_2018/Atlas-VAC/PDF_AIPparSSection/VAC/AD/AD-2.LFAC.pdf

The link on the Calais VAC is http://aeroport.capcalaisis.fr/en/forms/customs-form, which does not work.

What you need to do is amend the AIP or change the name of the page on the airport website, so that it matches the AIP. It would be much easier to change the website, I think.

We were there lasty Saturday and it was really buzzing. They were parachute jumping all day. And yes, the restaurant had just re-opened.

3 customs officers were in their new office checking passports in and out.

The landing fee for our PA28 is just 10euros and it's 1euro for a bus ride into town or to Cite Europe (every 30 mins, google timetable for Calais bus 1B). Beware though that although the bus is supposed to come to the aerodrome, it doesn't always. Last saturday we had to walk into town (15 mins) and pick it up there. Once on board it's a good service though.

Yes, thank you for your assistance. I did separately speak with your colleage.

To share with all, I asked a query regarding the prohibited area (LFP26) 5nm NE of the aerodrome along the coast. I asked if it was likely/usual to be able to get clearance from Lille to fly though it along the coast at low level. Answer: It's a nuclear power plant, so not very likely.

LFP026 is a permanent restricted area. A huge nuclear powe station.

In France, “prohibited” really does mean prohibited so Lille is most unlikely to give you a clearance through, when it so easy to circle around the ZIT. The only exception is for aircraft on an IFR flight plan - and flying the instrument approach.

Even aircraft flying on a VFR flight plan and then asking to fly the GNSS approach, have been refused.

AIP France ANR 5.1 says:

ENR 5.1 ZONES INTERDITES, REGLEMENTEES, DANGEREUSES
PROHIBITED, RESTRICTED, DANGER AREAS

1 PROHIBITED AREAS
...
1.2 Prohibited Areas associated to nuclear or petrochemical industrial sites:
1.2.1 Entry conditions : P1 to P5, P8, P9, P13, P16, P19, P21, P25 to 31, P36, P37 and P40:
Entry prohibited H24 except for:
- IFR GAT ACFT having obtained ATC clearance;
ACFT performing defense and french police forces, customs, health, civil
safety and surveillance, french electricity company (EDF) flights as part
of their missions when the area avoidance is not possible, and after having
obtained entry instructions.
- flights having a 48HR prior permission requested and entry instructions.

Authority delivering the permissions:
Commandement de la Défense Aérienne et des Opérations Aériennes.
Request form : consult the website :
https://sites.google.com/site/derogzonesinterdites/
E-mail : cdaoa-bao-cnoa-rens.chef.fct@intradef.gouv.fr

Authority delivering entry instructions (squawk, radio frequency…):
Centre National des Opérations Aériennes.
TEL : +33 (0)800 39 73 75 (free call) ou +33 (0)4 37 50 38 23.

So 48 hours PPR, and follow entry instructions if PPR granted. (I'd guess it is unlikely that it would be.)
