The team at Calais came up trumps (not sure if I should use that term now) passing through on Friday to Brienne, with no restaurant, Alex made us all coffee, on are return Sunday, he has organized a coffee maker machine at the booking in counter, so we could just help our self, what service and all in the cheap landing fee.
When one of our number had a problem with his flight plan Cloe and air traffic came to his rescue and he was quickly on his way.
Well done All the Calais Team
Thanks again Colin

Calais was as helpful as ever at the weekend. The coffee was good; there's a donations jar. The seamless closure and opening of flight plans was appreciated greatly.

14 kt wind meant some repositioning on the ground to avoid long taxying in a shopping trolley and to make an intersection take-off. Kudos to the arriving Cub arriving while several of us waited at Bravo; he wheeled it all the way to the far turn off.

I"ve always found the staff there to be very friendly and helpful, particularly the pompiers when we had a deflation on landing a couple of years ago.( No- the landing was perfect--long story)
Once the restaurant reopens (AND THE MEALS ARE OK) then hopefully it will attract more visitors and support from UK pilots. It"S only one euro on the bus to Calais -pretty efficient service.--and it makes a change from LT.

Any update on whether the restaurant is open yet?
Was thinking of taking a group of aircraft there today.

Situation update flew in today ,cafe opening confirmed as September 1st the new patron was working on the premises. The number one bus is still diverted from the airfield due to the large scale reconstruction of the village square.Nearest place to catch the bus is the main road.Boulangerie Depecker in the village reopens to normal hours tomorrow 23rd August after their annual vacation..Superb lunch as usual in the Bistrot restaurant in the village pity it’s hours are so limited.Very little traffic at the airport today ! What a gem for a 10€ landing fee and no hassle.

@Bathman

The airfield spent a long time with no English-speaking FISO

The inconsistency of the restaurant's presence

The inability to walk to the centre

The fact the centre isn't as superficially attractive as Le Touquet

Perception "Le Touquet = glamour from the interwar period. Calais = immigrants and sleeping bag runs."

It needs a lengthy spell of settled operation, gradually people will come to accept that it makes a change from the Saturday/Sunday bimble to Le Touquet to pay a £30 landing fee and buy overpriced fuel. They will get used to hopping the one euro bus to the centre, will discover the three excellent restaurants that are the equal of anything Le Touquet can offer (and the dozens of average, but adequate ones), whilst the shopping is better and more varied.

BUT: Losing the FISO or the restaurant again will set it back even further

We have taken to using calais as our routine bound to France because of the quick service and normal fuel prices. We've been there twice in the last couple of weeks, each time en route to the south and onward to Italy (once in a C172, once in a twin comanche). I'm looking forward to trying the new restaurant. Equally, we have used le Touquet outbound again because it's such a delightful place to stay, and, as at Calais, the airfield team are charm personified.
