Every year I get my IR renewed in September : it is valid till the end of the month of test, 12 months hence.(i.e.30.9.18)

Every other year I do the extra stuff (bad weather circuits etc at the IR renewal to allow my examiner to sign off my IMCr now called IRR. It is valid till the end of the month 25 months later (30.11.19).

But I tend to 'write off' the 25th month as it creeps away so as to do the IR(R) every other year as an extended IR renewal before IR expires end September.
Keeps it neat and tidy, as the biennial SEP land can be done at the same time.

Thanks Balliol.

(8) On successful completion of the Revalidation or Renewal of an IMC or IR(R)Rating the Examiner is entitled to sign the Certificate of Revalidation,
stating IMC or IR(R), test date and valid for 25 months to the end of the calendar month.

So if I really wanted to make the most of the time it would be best to do the Revalidation flight in the same month as expiry.
