A quick question. Do you need to leave France for the return trip to the UK from a customs airport, more specifically can I return home direct fro abbeville or do I need to return via Calais or L2K

You must leave France from a designated customs airfield and Abbeville no longer qualifies sadly...

Yes, you must leave France from a designated customs airfield.

This is because the UK is not part of the Schengen Area and every entry and exit to the Schengen Area area needs to follow the relevant procedure.

Although hypothetically, nobody stops you if you do, and Lille info are entirely happy to activate your Flightplan for you once airborne. Not that I would advocate such a thing.

Anecdotally, the fines for doing that can be well into 4 figures.
