I remember attending the 50th Anniversary celebrations at the Derwent Valley, it was spectacular, many flypasts and a display by The Red's tailored to the valley setting, there were many 10's of thousands of people there, a truly memorable occasion.
I thought they might have pushed the boat out a little more what with the 75th and 100th anniversaries this year, but it seems not.
I'm going to express a view of this weeks activity which maybe slightly controversial, it is not meant to be discourteous but it might be challenging.
The bravery and commitment shown by those involved in that original real event was outstanding. Yet here we are discussing activity to commemorate the event and on the day in question the Lancaster didn't fly because of weather, weather apparently so poor that the latest high tech 617 squadron aircraft wouldn't fly in. and then on the second attempt, with improved weather, there is no publicity for the event because of fear of traffic jams.
I may have got this totally wrong, and if I have I'm sure someone will point out that I have and why, but I can't help thinking that we're lucky the original members of 617 squadron had a little more 's p u n k' about them ...
