Primarily for general aviation discussion, but other aviation topics are also welcome.

Ben K - Sorry for the late response.
The lady in question asked me to keep her type written words confidential.
And... More importantly - I've just rifled through my files and, at the present moment, can't find it :? Given more time, I can perhaps recover it.

The report issued however, did reflect the saga of mistakes, and the rather disappointing decision making process.
Before they even reached their point of no return, their options had reduced dramatically.

Their departure airfield had closed in below minimums
Their alternative was below minimums
Their destination airfield was very suspect.
The wind strength wouldn't allow them to reach their destination.
No Emergency transmission was given until the engine quit - so no one was prewarned..

The pilot lost her aeroplane.
The insurance wouldn't pay out
The passenger sued the pilot.
The pilot basically lost everything.

A very salutary tale.

Stornoway to Hofn is 446 nm. Was she ever going to make it in an umodified AA5, still air, with any sort of reserve (I am not familiar with the AA5) ?

Simple, she took off outside of legal IFR limits with no where to go ?

1. No take-off alternate due wx at departure aerodrome.
2. No second alternate planned as the first alternate was below minimums.
3. Overall poor fuel planning taking into account enroute wx and winds.

Their departure airfield had closed in below minimums
Their alternative was below minimums
Their destination airfield was very suspect.
The wind strength wouldn't allow them to reach their destination.

I know exactly why they didn't pay out, as the lady herself told me, but it is neither for me nor G1 to disclose her personal business.

Suffice to say it was not due to any operational aspect of the flight.

@jpaillard, the original poster hasn't been on the forum for nearly two years so you're probably unlikely to get a response from him. COVID has got in the way of such trips over the last two years. I'd certainly like to return (in summer months).

@jpaillard, you might find this as fascinating as I did - and with an SR22 it might be of more practical use to you than me in my VFR Jodel. ;)

The presenter sometimes appears here, so could be thanked in person. :D
