The white, T-tailed, single piston-engine civilian aircraft observed by the Chinoock crew must have been flying inverted in in its attempt to follow or formate. Must be quite difficult when reading a notam, trying to contact Solent radar and monitoring 121.5 kHz :)

... the co-pilot selected guard and the Captain made a call on the VHF guard frequency, ‘Aircraft in the vicinity of Thorney Island attempting to follow or formate on a Chinook, this is Chinook aircraft [C/S], cease and turn away’.
