The pilot has been named locally as Eric Rhodes, from Leicestershire.

He was taken to Pilgrim Hospital in Boston before being transferred to Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham with serious injuries, including broken ribs, a punctured lung and dislocated shoulder.

Mr Rhodes had flown his plane from Boston Air Field to Skegness airfield and was returning back to Boston when the wing of his plane allegedly folded in half and plummeted at high speed before crashing to the ground. He was flying his microlight next to another aircraft.

The eyewitness said: "His aircraft just came spiralling from 2,000ft. The wing of the plane folded in air and he spiralled down from 2,000ft. It is unbelievable for anyone to survive that fall. It's absolutely amazing and I really hope he makes a full recovery."

Mr Rhodes, who was flying the Flex wing microlight plane, is believed to be from the Market Harborough area.
