A radio upgrade is a one off, landing fees are every flight and on our aircraft - £65/hr or so and 135 kts, £15+ is a considerable percentage added onto your flying costs!

It can also be reasoned that an expensive radio is a one-off, is going to last 20-30 years, which makes it a much smaller cost per year per member per flight if take the long term view.

So that £2000 radio, over 20 years is equivalent to £10.41 per month.... i.e. a landing fee
Over 30 years it is nearer a fiver per month!

With a 5 member syndicate, if went for a fancy £10k GPS/Nav/Com, over 20 years the cost per month per member is £8.33, a more ironic landing fee!

You also don't get coupons for free cake at airfields in the magazines lol.

It is all relative. On a monthly basis some people pay far more for all the cable/satellite tv channel packages or top speed broadband. Some may prefer to spent that on actually getting airborne.

It is all about choices and perceived value and over what period choose to write-off the expenditure of a 'high' price tag item.

Having said that, our humble syndicate will never be able to afford a new spamcan so will continue to replace bits as and when, plus do engine overhauls, repaint,...

One of our Group is in USA at moment and will purchase a certified G5 to fit in our EASA C182Q.
I note that the baro display is inches only, and not reconfigurable to mb/hps.
Not a big problem as our existing Altimeter will still be in place, and a simple conversion card will suffice.
Do you envisage a future software update for hps display for European use??
