I know, it's been a difficult week trying to get from the shortlist (everyone on there deserved a place on the Rally) to just fifteen teams. Very difficult indeed.

We do have other Rallies coming up, so perhaps they (and others) will be successful in the future.

...and Riccardo & his flying partner, and Clive & Annabelle from Henstridge, and...

I reckon from the videos etc that everybody played a superb match. The enthusiasm and wit on show was marvellous, and the very fact the opportunity was there at all is a great thing.

I don't envy Sam and his team the job of shortlisting and selection but good luck to all for the Rally and future chances.

We gave it our best shot and even though we didn’t make it, we have enjoyed all the fun and games just getting to the final selection stage. Look forward to watching the progress of the Rally next March as it heads North. Thanks to all the forumites who wished us well and gave their support. It was much appreciated.
All the best, Steve and Rob (Aerotech).

Maybe worth a trip to Sun'n Fun to see who makes it all the way.

The one big mystery is who is sponsoring all the shipping and re-assembly etc.. Must be over $100k involved.

The only one that comes to mind in Red Bull. Maybe all will become clear soon!

Sam Rutherford wrote:..the re-assembly is done by the teams themselves (liability).

How does that work then?

I was under the impression (possibly wrongly, and so would like to learn) that with the exception of Permit/RSA/Experimental/etc, only qualified people could take aeroplanes apart and put them back together, and even then they would need inspections etc...no?

Regards, SD..

If it's done like last time, they all talk together and figure out if there is sufficient expertise amongst the pilots anyway (for both spanner-wielding and paperwork). This often works, otherwise they club together and organise someone to be on site and do several planes simultaneously. It's the one area that may involve cost, we don't cover (for liability reasons):

1. Dismantling
2. Packing/securing in the container (if it moves about on the high seas, that's their problem!)
3. Rebuild
4. All same if it needs to be shipped home from the FINISH.

Basically we cover everything on the Rally except touch the aircraft!

Hope that makes sense?

Looking at the thread " £1m Cocaine Seizure at Bagby " There's plenty of anecdotal evidence that HM C&E can use any old person to tear aircraft apart....rebuilding them is a different kettle of fish, though. Having said that, a certain Africa-roaming Ex-Veterinary seems to have found a method of repairing in places where the oversight may not be quite as rigorous. :D

Reassembly in Ushuaia will surely require inspection and signing off by certified engineer / inspector ... at least if the CofA or Permit is to be valid and the insurance to be operative for the trip. And the Argentinian authorities are likely to require certification. But it has all gone very quiet since announcement of the final 15 lucky selected crews - rumour has it that it has been cancelled or at least substantially delayed. Maybe the promised sponsors have not stepped forward ?

There will be engineers in USH to sign-off the rebuilds, and it's very quiet because we have a lot to do now and little time.

No delay currently expected but we are working with a new partner with some new needs...
