This forum is for anything to do with light aviation
I´m on a vacation near Torrevieja (near Alicante/Murcia) in Spain, and would like to rent something for a local flight. Does anyone have any knowledge of local GA airfields and equipment available for rent?
I hired a PA 28 from Muchamiel airfield just a bit north of Alicante in 2003, friendly people though fairly hard to find. co-ordinates are N38 26 W 0 28. Just google flying in spain. The ICAO code is LEMU. I flew with a Spanish instructor, who did the radio work. We flew over Alicante airport at 1500' after doing an orbit first to let some heavy metal land then flew to Murcia to land, then my mate flew back. Well worth it. I don't have a phone number but I do remember they have a fairly long siesta in the afternoon. Have fun.
I also few recently from Muchamiel Airfield (LEMU), it's about 15 minutes drive from Alicante centre. I did my SEP Renewal with an instructor/examiner called Javier on the PA-28, he spoke excellent English and we had a beer afterwards together.
We found the airfield fairly easily using google maps (you definately need a car to get to it). It's a very pleasant place, with a nice restaurant/bar to watch the traffic going by. The airfield also has quite a lot of based firefighting aircraft including the Kamov Helicopters (counter rotating blades, very interesting), and a seaplane (http://www.peter2000.co.uk/aviation/tro ... op-big.jpg stolen from Peters website).
The airfield operates with an Air/Ground frequency, and they happily operate in English. Despite Alicante being quite close, they don't require you to talk to them when operating out of the airfield and into the training area (around Villajoyosa-Benidorm area). You can get a transit along the VFR corridors overhead Alicante fairly easily. (Although I was advised by a few people at the airfield, that this is very depandant on the controller on duty, as they have some who are particularly difficult).
I believe the actual club closes from around 1pm to 4pm in the afternoons, but then is open to sunset (2130ish at the moment?).
Generally I'd say it's a very pleasant airfield, the PA-28 I flew, despite being old, was very clean and tidy, was properly fitted with liferafts etc, and from my untrained eye and walkrounds appeared to be well maintained.
I'd definately recommend going flying around the area, and I'm sure you'd be welcomed into the airfield.
Seaplane was a Air Tractor AT-802U by the way. Also be cautious with the Kamovs, they are a big helicopter. I had one lifting with an underslung load about 50m lateral to the active runway, and felt the full force of the wake at about 15ft agl on landing, and that was a big lesson to me.
Hi again, I have the phone number for a guy to get in touch with regarding hiring an aircraft. It is at Muchameil airfield. Give Keith Preston a call on
(0034) 965 612 392. Also a freind of mine who runs his own company in Cardiff, spends some time at this airfield carring out training on 3 axis microlights and check flights. GOOD AIR AVAITION...(0034) 966 716 193. He's there now on holiday. Hope this helps. Steve G.
The website of Redhill based 'Cloudbase Aviation' at www.theflyingschool.co.uk contains details about Muchamiel airfield (where they keep a Shadow microlight for club members to use on holiday) including several photos.
What's an iPad? Do I really care?
