Biplane that was first to land at Manchester Airport returns

Postby Old Pilot » Fri May 18, 2012 8:27 am

Nice story in the Mail today....

A historic biplane that was the first to land at Manchester Airport has returned to mark the airport's 75th birthday.

The vintage de Havilland Hornet Moth flew in today carrying Peter Menzies, son of original pilot Duncan who was aboard the aircraft back on May 17, 1937.Image
The single-engined plane was originally not even supposed to have touched down at the Ringway airstrip, as it was then known.

It was bound for the nearby Barton airfield in Salford, en route from White Waltham in Berkshire, but was forced to use the Ringway because of heavy rain.

Although the Ringway's landing strip was complete, it had no buildings and was not officially opened until June 25, 1938.
Owner David Weston today flew the aircraft back to Manchester Airport, where it sat alongside the world’s largest commercial airliner, the 517-seat, double-decker Airbus A380, which had jetted in from Dubai.

Just watched it take off from EGCC 05L. It's now on the ground at Woodford.

I was driving along Ringway Rd just before the runway threshold when it came across just in front of us. It was a big surprise and nice site to see. I was wondering why it was there. :D

I've done a piece on the blog, nicking the DM's pics but adding a bit of background about Ringway.

Was lucky enough to meet these two gentleman this week, whilst it was night stopping at Barton. Both very nice people and a lovely aeroplane too. He did say his landing at Manchester Int wasn't the best he had ever done! but I guess that what happens when the whole world is watching!..

My Photos of it arriving at Barton..
