A historic biplane that was the first to land at Manchester Airport has returned to mark the airport's 75th birthday.

The vintage de Havilland Hornet Moth flew in today carrying Peter Menzies, son of original pilot Duncan who was aboard the aircraft back on May 17, 1937.

The single-engined plane was originally not even supposed to have touched down at the Ringway airstrip, as it was then known.
It was bound for the nearby Barton airfield in Salford, en route from White Waltham in Berkshire, but was forced to use the Ringway because of heavy rain.

Although the Ringway's landing strip was complete, it had no buildings and was not officially opened until June 25, 1938.
Owner David Weston today flew the aircraft back to Manchester Airport, where it sat alongside the world’s largest commercial airliner, the 517-seat, double-decker Airbus A380, which had jetted in from Dubai.
