Night flying: Cannes-Avignon return

Postby papsmc » Thu Jan 03, 2013 11:24 am

Happy New Year to all!!!!

As part of my night flying qualification, did a round trip from my home base in Cannes to Avignon (LFMV) and back.
Take-off was at dusk to ensure we had enough time to come back before Cannes closes. Plane was the usual Cessna C172S.
Sound is still flaky, I need to figure out something with my Gopro...
Hope you enjoy

Nice vid, what settings do you use on your GoPro as you've managed to eliminate the 'prop blur' totally. 8)

Quite possibly sent from my Nexus 7 which cost 400 quid less than your iPad.

"Flying at night" setting? I'm guessing in lower light a longer "shutter speed" is used. That's why people use neutral density filters in the day to cut down the light and thus get rid of the prop effects.

But didn't someone say the GoPro 3 was better in this respect?

Not sure, I've had a look on a few of their user forums but not seen much so far re prop blur.

I used a borrowed Gopro 3 silver edition - settings were standard 1080p@25fps. I then ran the video through neat video in FCPX to remove some of the noise, but it was not easy to get a good profile on the dark portions. Both of these probably helped with the prop blur thingy...
I am awaiting my Gopro 3 Black edition to try the 15fps setting to see how that goes.

Interesting... I have some ND filters but haven't tried them on GoPro, wonder how I should attach it... bit of DIY or whether someone already manufactured something nifty! It will make the clouds look much nicer :)

I think you have to block quite a bit of the light, but others on the forum can tell you more.

for day time flying these little thingies help quite a bit:
http://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B0087S2 ... irect=true
they ND filters cut to the Gopro housing size, and are inside the housing. I've used them and they can help as well
