Grilled herring fly-out (with pics)

One benefit of living relatively far north is that it is light enough to have plenty of time to take an After Work flight. A few nights ago, a fellow pilot and I took the hour-long flight to ESMH Höganäs (see also http://forums.flyer.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=71261) to eat a grilled herring sandwich. I know: it sounds disgusting, but it's actually quite good. It has rye bread, herring, red onions, parsley and a sweet sauce normally eaten with smoked salmon. You could say it’s a local version of the 100 dollar hamburger.

Approaching Höganäs in the Swedish “county” of Scania (Skåne) from the north. On the far side of the peninsula one can see Denmark through the late afternoon haze. Hamlet’s castle at Elsinore is just a few miles south on the Danish side.

The reason for the trip: the famed grilled herring sandwich, known as "flying fish". Swedish, Danish and German pilots flock here every Tuesday night during the summer months.

Aaahhh: life's good when you’re a pilot, innit!

Nice pics, weather, etc. For Info for Southerners who are into such things, there is a festival I've been to, but only a couple of times in 20 years- the foire aux harengs in Dieppe (time of year - mid November - usually means problems but if it's sky like the one in the photo, it's 'somewhere to go'). The smoke and the smell of burning herrings as you fly over the town at about 2000' on the way to the airport is something that stays with you as a nasal memory.

In recent years they've decided to add 'et coquilles St Jacques' to the title to attract a different clientelle.

Nice pics, I'm getting more and more tempted to visit Gothenburg for a long weekend and partake in some local flying (with you as my local oppo, obviously )
