I'll try very hard to make it (for the full weekend this time :)) but the first half of next year is already turning out to be quite busy for me, especially early June. I'll be watching this thread with interest though.

Just to add another option into the mix, if France is being considered - how about Colmar (LFGA)? It's about the right distance from the UK, has customs, and an instrument approach is available for those that want it. The town itself is beautiful, as is crossing the Vosges mountains enroute , and nearby posh nosh Auberge de l'Ill has good reports.

One downside - not much of a flight for Awful Charlie, though he'd be the person most likely to make it!

Is Colmar a place we should visit? I've never been there.

It has a grass runway, but only for the locals - a bit like Chartres (a place I'd love to visit again).

The Schlumpf collection is not far away for petrol heads, and some may like the food, particularly as it will be asparagus season. For some more recent history, the Maginot Line is not that far away, but far enough that a hire car is going to be preferable. If EU stuff takes you fancy, Strasbourg is between Colmar and the Maginot.

For flying around, Colmar sits between the Vosges and the Black forest, and the Alps are less than an hour to the south if the weather plays, and you can do the 'three countries in a minute' orbit if you like (you can also play that game with bars at ground level, but again a short drive/train away from Colmar) After flying there is plenty of local wine to try, although that may not be to everyone's liking.

And for Keef, if the little Concorde wanted to use the grass at LFGB, I'm sure I could tuck it up in the hangar for the night and ferry you to Colmar

Pete - my comments were more a reflection of the years that I used to attend such Fly Outs - it was not meant to favour any particular countries; apologies for any confusion.

For some reason, the dates worked out last year for Koblenz. For 2013, as per a number of the previous years, the proposed dates coincide with the Monaco GP, so I won't be able to make it unfortunately.

In an endeavour to ingratiate myself with a chilled out Iceman - Are the dates set in stone already? Is there any 'wobble' factor?

The prior weekend (18th/19th May) is free (for me at least)
The following weekend (1st/2nd June) is the AeroExpo thingy at Sywell so may well create a distraction.

All that being said - the weekend of the 25/26th May seems best for me so sod the Grand Prix (Yep! I'm a selfish barsteward  )

2013 fly-out

Postby skydriller » Fri Dec 28, 2012 8:36 pm

I see Frank mentioned Bordeaux....

Well, if anyone wants to head this way, as long as it isn't the W/E of 21st June (sister getting Married!!) then I will take some time off, and Susan & I could arrange something with my aero-club here in Medoc....

I was hoping to head to Portugal this year....

Regards, SD..

Postby letpmar » Sat Dec 29, 2012 9:20 pm

How about vannes it's an easy flight with Cherbourg to clear customs and dinard and San Malo a great extra stop if people want to. I have a static caravan there so that's me sorted for accommodation.

Well, I suppose somebody will have to be there to make sure G1 takes his pills, so count me in Frank.

South into France sounds good, or West to Ireland, or North to Orkney, or East to....but it would have to be after the weekend of 25th May for me to be there.

Some very interesting suggestions, keep them coming.

Apart from distance and GA facilities it is also good if we can do things which interest the non flyers in the group and ideally a destination hitch offers something if he weather is not stellar for the whole weekend.
