Angouleme (LFBU) ?
The airport is about 5nm out from the town. Long hard runway + a grass runway Customs (24hrs by fax) + Fuel (Avgas)
I've only ever camped there as an overnight stop years ago - so generally know nowt about it.

Google says it's a bit historic with loads of places to visit. Lots of ramparts (Oooer matron?) a museum or two (Comics, archaeology and stuff)

Looks like a generous variety of hotels and restaurants - there's even a mention of messing around on boats on the river (so I could bring my sailors hat)

Was there last year.

GA friendly airfield, slow, but no major hassles (They have lost all their commercial flights)

Weekend of May 26th is La Ferte Alais, possibly the best airshow in Europe. You can't fly in because there are so many aircraft in the show there is no spare parking.
I will be there ( by car) but would like to join the flyout next year as I had to bail out this year. Hope the dates don't clash.
If Keef goes in Concord I could have a spare seat.

I went to North Cape 4 years ago and it was the best fly out in my life...
It's worth thinking about it...;)

Hi All,

If anyone wants to come down to the south-west of France, my aeroclub has 900m of Grass in good condition, there is plenty of space for aircraft, we have facilities if anyone want to camp - and we have fuel. There are a several hotels in the area, though only in small towns (St Laurent/Pauillac/Lesparre/Margaux) and there are plenty of Chateaux vinyards around here and I could arrange a tour easily - A club member has a decent Cru Bourgoise, and there are the big name chateaux too.

To come here as a destination, transport would be required, especially if the weather goes pear shaped, and depending upon numbers a minibus could be hired, then a trip (or several) into Bordeaux (about 45 mins) is easy. If anyone wants to go into Bordeaux Merignac itself, that is a regional airport, and I dont know charges there, but can find out. It has a regular hourly bus into town and plenty of Taxi's.

Perhaps an option might be to fly in for the day to our little aeroclub for a Chateau visit should the weather co-operate, while being based at Bordeaux (big city, plenty to do) or somewhere the other side of the Gironde - Angouleme (hard) or Saintes (grass) ?

Regards, SD..

Angouleme has a very nice grass landing strip too :D

My own feeling is that it's all a little too close and familiar - I'd rather it was more of an adventure (Spoiled by too many Raduno I guess?)

If you want something a bit different how about Ouessant (LFEC). Superb island that I guess few have been out to. 830m hard and fuel etc on the mainland on the way over.

And still do :D

Plus - I think there's a dirth of decent hotels on Ouessant(Ushant) at least a lack of ones sufficient to accommodate 25/30 people

Ouessant is a very interesting island. Many Lighthouses but not many hotels.
Good runway but the apron is small so not sure more than four or five aircraft could visit at the same time.
The island would be an ideal day trip if you were based in Brest or somewhere similar.
Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads!

Colmar has something to recommend it. Stopped off there a couple of years ago on the way back from Austria. Stayed in Riquewihr (sp?) which is very charming, and the local wines are much under-rated. Easy to organise a wine tour. Vosges mountains are not to be under-rated.

Hmm : Not so sure about Colmar: I went there in 1958 when it was still full of bullet holes and again in 2006:

It's cute and very pricey. Reminded me of a cross between Bruges and Milton Keynes.

I've done enough wine tours now to last a lifetime:

Still, if that's what's decided for a forum flyout I'll be there.....

I will closely review the suggestions over the weekend and make an executive decision and announce the destination etc.

It is unlikely that there will be much give in the dates as a BH works for most and the earlier May BH means that it would be colder for people to do things outside.

Thanks for all te suggestions so far.
