The 2013 programme for the Oxford Branch of the Royal Aeronautical Society is now available.

All events are held at the Oxford Science Park. Everyone welcome - guests and members.
Normal Tuesday lectures are in the Magdalen Centre and the annual Sadler dinner is in the Sadler building!

This one's a chance to dust off yer DJs & put on yer posh frocks!The guest speaker will be Mr John Roberts, Chief Engineer of Airbus UK, who will talk about the first five years of commercial operation of the A380 Airbus. His talk will be followed by a three-course dinner.
Numbers are limited to 70 and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Speaker: Dr Andrew Neely

Subject: “Hypersonic Flight Testing in Australia"

Australia has a vigorous and resourceful program of hypersonic research that has created a world-wide following. Australian researchers and their US colleagues won the prestigious von Karman Award for international co-operation in Aeronautics.

Dr Neely is an associate professor at the University of New South Wales Canberra and his main research interests include hypersonics, aerothermodynamics, aero-structures, gas turbine engines and related experimental techniques. He has worked at Oxford University and for Rolls Royce on aero-engine exhausts and the integrity of hot structures.

What a lovely evening!
A new venue for us and it didn't fail to deliver. Lots of parking, great facilities, pretty good food... average wine...
John Roberts, Chief Engineer of Airbus UK, gave a fascinating talk about Airbus with a focus on the A380. A mix of behind the scenes footage, facts and figures, and not-to-be-repeated-in-public stories.
And a couple of forumites did join the party, so I wasn't Belinda No Buddies after all. Great to see you both.

Speaker: Dr Thomas Connolley

Subject: “The Diamond Light Source and its Use in Aviation-Related Research"

The Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron facility, located at the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus in Oxfordshire. By accelerating electrons to near light-speed, Diamond generates brilliant beams of light, with wavelengths ranging from infra-red to hard X-rays. The light generated is used for academic and industrial research, with over 2000 researchers visiting Diamond’s beamlines to conduct experiments in a wide range of disciplines. These include structural biology, health and medicine, solid-state physics, materials & magnetism, nanoscience, electronics, earth & environmental sciences, chemistry, cultural heritage, energy and engineering.

Thomas Connolley has a degree in Metallurgy and the Science of Materials from Oxford University, and a doctorate from The University of Southampton, where he conducted research on fatigue cracking in gas turbine discs. He has had a varied career in materials engineering, including posts at British Aerospace Military Aircraft (now BAE Systems), Materials Performance Technologies (New Zealand), and the National University of Ireland. He is now Senior Beamline Scientist for the Joint Engineering, Environmental and Processing (JEEP) Beamline at Diamond Light Source, where he has worked since 2006.
