Norfolk/Suffolk Strip Flying Weekend: Now 25-27 August

Postby Straight'n'Level » Mon Jul 02, 2012 8:19 pm

Evening all,

Following on from a couple of fantastic strip flying weekends around Devon and Cornwall over the last two years, a few of us are planning another strip flying weekend holiday in August.

This year we are planning to head east to see some new scenery and make some new friends. Dates we are looking at are 4th and 5th August, which is during the Olympics (if that makes a difference...). I would be interested in extending this into Monday/Tuesday the following week if anyone else is interested.

I haven't had much time to think about destinations or an itinerary, in previous years 4-5 strips per day has been comfortable with time for chatting and making friends as we go.

So far I've got a fairly short "would-like-to-do" list:
Weybourne - visit the tank museum and potential overnight stop if we can arrange that
Cromer
Priory Farm

Can anyone add recommendations around the Norfolk/Suffolk area - minimum strip length of 600m to be comfortable.

And who else wants to join us for a weekend of flying and camping?

Would have been more than a little tempted but have to go to my sister's wedding this weekend!

Weybourne comes highly recommended, they didn't want me to camp on the field last time I went, but there is a decent little campsite at the entrance to the museum. Don't think the two are related. Also had a very decent meal at the Ship Inn in Weybourne village.

One of my favourite UK destinations.

PS - also had a very good welcome at Shipdham when I called in there for fuel. Not exactly a strip, but worth a look.

I might try and meet up at one strip if work allows.

Fenland has to be on the list I would guess?

Afternoon tea and cake at Fenland sounds like a good idea :thumleft:

I would be interested in this, contracts and therefore funds permitting.

No tents for me, though - B&B or pub time!

Nonono the idea is to find rural strips where we can barbecue and star gaze and camp next to the planes. :)

Oh, okay then. We'll try and find some strips with nearby B&B accommodation as well.

You will be made very welcome at Priory Farm. there is a BBQ and basic facilities to make camping a practical proposition. Drop me a pm and I will happily see to it that your visit goes smoothly.

Priory Farm would be a great overnight stop :thumleft:

I almost had an impromptu overnight there a couple of years ago due to chatting flying and drinking tea completely oblivious to the time  Would be good to go back intending to stop for the night.

I'm in as per normal. I could probably extend to include the Monday too.

As a starter for a plan, how does this look to everyone?

At this stage I haven't considered such things as PPR. There are also a couple of other possible stops that I am still investigating, so this isn't a firm itinerary, it will almost certainly get modified as the weekend approaches.

SATURDAY
Meet at Conington (987m) for LUNCH.
Fenland (670m)
Marshland (850m)
Priory Farm (550m) - OVERNIGHT

SUNDAY
Priory Farm
Beccles (750m)
Scenic route along the coast to Weybourne (617m) - Visit to Muckleburgh Tank Museum
Burnham (510m)
Shipdham (862m)
Cromer (615m) - OVERNIGHT

MONDAY
Cromer
Seething (800m)
Elmsett (890m)
Sackville Farm (730m) - Depart for home

I have in the past tended to steer clear of Shipdham as their runway tarmac was breaking up and becoming a bit prop-chip threatening. Have they sorted this?
