Lancaster restoration

Postby Sharpie » Wed Jan 02, 2013 11:52 am

Did anyone see this:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-20886684

A Lancaster being restored (it's already up to taxi) and quite possibly flying in the near future. Considering that at the moment there are only two flying Lancs in the whole world then this has to be great news!

Edit: I notice that there is an item about it in the Flyer headlines.

I saw it on the BBC news channel earlier, hadn't heard anything before I saw it this morning though.

Don't you just hate that headline?

Of all the things to say about the superb Pantons, using the one word 'pensioners' to define them

It make it sounds as if they toddle off to a Day Centre and knock up a fully-functioning Lancaster between their milky tea and the piano-accompanied sing-along of 'We'll gather lilacs'

It's been taxi-able for quite some time. I thought it was being restored for a film??

It does indeed taxi and I have ridden it - tremendous experience.

It has appeared in several film and TV programmes, but it is being restored to flight largely I think because the Panton brothers see it as a next step. It was bought originally as a memorial to a brother killed in a Halifax during WW2 (What a pity they couldn't find one of those to restore instead)

The return to flight was heralded a couple of years back and a stream of airworthy Merlins have been arriving at East Kirkby since.

A bravura project.

Blimey! What a great story. How much are one of those Merlins do you reckon?

I have seen £75,000 quoted as the going rate for an airworthy Merlin, but that's an internet figure so I don't guarantee its accuracy.

Maybe they waited until the January Sales for a BOGOF?

Might have just been the delivery packaging...you find out that the engine was at least working on arrival. And then return the now engineless Spit to the supplier by road.

Thanks Pete, I hadn't considered that possibility!

It will be great if they can get it flying, they have been at it for a very long time and I suspect they have ploughed an embarrassing amount of their own money into it.

Fred Panton has got a book out 'Man on a Mission' (written with granddaughter Kate). Available from Lincs Aviation Museum. I am sure funds will help the Lanc fly. :)
