Re: What Axe?I found this website a while ago when Mrs.G and I were considering buying a small hobby woodland.

Widest pieces of the trunk are about 2' - it was sliced across rather than along - most welcome if suitable. Cheering up a bit with grumpy spells later
What Axe?
Same here - with the addition of a 15yo son. It is amazing how much he can produce in an hour if he irritates me sufficiently. (Are we still allowed to use Hard Labour these days?) Nick
Cautionary Tale: Make sure the head of the wedge is not 'burred'. In the early 90s an old boy was admitted to casualty locally having collapsed while splitting logs with his son. Initially everyone thought heart attack and it was only when blood tests showed severe anaemia that it was suggested he was bleeding internally. Despite immediate surgery when he was opened up his abdomen was full of blood and the source could not be found. He died on the table and post mortem showed a shard of metal from the head of the wedge had broken off and was propelled by the force of the sledgehammer blow right through his shirt, his abdominal wall, his intestines and sliced a hole in his aorta leading to rapid exsanguination. Persuaded me to buy an electric/hydraulic log splitter.......... You have been warned..... Primum non nocere..
