Postby Rod1 » Mon Sep 17, 2012 12:55 pm

Some unfortunate things going on over on PPrune;

Not possible to discuss them on there now!

Well that thread has been locked as well now...

The next time anyone here complains about over-moderation, they should be forced to spend a week on PPRuNe!

Now that's fair comment!

Many Proon mods(not GtE, interestingly) have always been heavy handed and uncommunicative. It's just the way it is. One of the things I like about here is there's no pervading "You're lucky we suffer you to use the facility" vibe.

Actually, I think it's only ever Proon that's made me feel that way - perhaps I'm still sensitive about being banned without explanation for a month, simply because (it turned out eventually, once they deigned to speak to me) that they didn't like a site I'd linked a quite innocent picture from.

Well if you go beyond all the speculation and conspiracy theories on that particular situtaion you will discover that there is not much to it.

The particular individuals account has been suspended and as a result it hides all of the historical postings so that only the original poster and the admins are able to see it. Nothing has been deleted and the OP has not flounced off.

Once the storm in a teacup is cleared up then I believe that it will all turn out to be a non event.

No forum is perfect, it relies on the moderators and operators to show good judgement. This does not always happen. Even on here in the past I have seen and even been on the recieving end of heavy and sometimes insulting moderation (mod is now gone). The fact that this forum is guided into being more social means that far less moderation is required and the guys doing the moderation are are generally level headed helped by the fact that a good many of us know each other personally.

I am excepting Keef from that as I think he is despotic lunatic hell bent on world domination.....

Anyone know how much the Proon charges for one of those banner advertisements that appear down the side of the page?

I'd gladly donate a tenner towards the cost of a Proon "Private Flying" advert extolling the splendours of the Flyer Forums, and the fascist-free moderation thereof.

Obviously, they'd pull the ad in a heartbeat once they twig what the content was, but not before the faint popping sound of several Proon moderator heads exploding could be heard.....

I think the ads cost about $245/month at full published rate

Afternoon chaps. Thanks to the person who pointed this thread out. I even registered on Flyer Forums as a result.

It's a bit unpleasant for me over on PPrune at the moment, and I'm feeling rather abused. I'm not going to publically explain what has happened, although a few people who I know well enough to explain have a reasonable picture of it.

In a nutshell, I did something which I felt was reasonable but that another of the PPrune moderators took great exception to, so he responded by making me invisible on the site, by removing my moderators powers, by removing my ability to send private messages as Genghis, and by posting (for about half a day anyhow until it got removed) my real name on one of the threads. He seems to have done this without consulting with the other moderators or with the site owners; the latter are looking into this at the moment (but being in the USA, are actually probably eating breakfast right now).

I'm optimistic that it'll all get sensibly sorted out shortly - the site owners at IB tend to be hands-off, but they are nice chaps and generally pretty sensible, as well as usually prepared to act decisively if they have to. No, I'm not at-all happy at my treatment, but on the other hand (even if it does feel a bit like I'm reading my own obituary) very grateful to the numerous people who have shown their support for what I've done over the years on PPrune and, ideally, would like to continue doing. I'm also very aware that this is not me being shut down by PPrune, it's me being shut down (hopefully temporarily) by somewhere between 1 and 3 people on PPrune (depending upon how many usernames each person has!). The vast majority of people on PPrune who have expressed any opinion are somewhere between neutral and supportive of me and I've been amazed at the vast number of supportive messages I've received privately from various directions.

I'm not going to post any more about this: here or anywhere else right now - I am trusting the site owners at Internet Brands to sort things out sensibly in their own time, and I don't think that my making accusations or publishing anything more than this will help anybody for the moment.

And in the meantime, I did some great flying at the weekend, and am doing some really interesting things professionally right now - and I am in this game for the flying, not the bulletin boards!

G

All very bizarre...

I find PPRuNe a weird place these days. In the last few years it seems to have become the white BMW/Audi driver's choice of places to meet....

I met BRL once who was a really nice chap but most of the people I communicated with there 10 years ago have subsequently moved here.

Steve, it's less what has happened and more how the mods there have handled it. For example, they could have written two lines to reflect what you say if they'd wished to but, no - it's: Lock. Silence. Lock.

You're dead right about Keef, though.

PS: Hello, G. :D

Hi Genghis and Welcome

i think one of the big differences between here and the other side is that many of us have met each other face:face and have a relationship off the forum, which does quell most of the silly behaviour, a look at the Social and Fly-in page will show that we have had at least 2 meals and 2 fly-ins in the past week
