Granny changes her mind about sky diving ...

Postby Colonel Panic » Fri May 25, 2012 8:18 pm

This 80 year old starts out all keen to go sky diving, but at the last minute changes her mind. Instructor pushes her out, and then ... well, watch this YouTube video from where it starts (time 2:00) until at least time 3:00.

Eeek!!!!

Mmm. That looked to be a tad dodgy. When I was meat bombing back in the day there was no tandem free fall - studes and first timers (and the worst - charity one-timers) went out from 2,000' on static lines with round 'chutes. I reckon more than 50% (more like 70% of the latter) were chucked out by the jump master when they baulked at the door.

Yes, If they refused before getting into the doorway, or worse froze on the step outside the aeroplane. Refuse early and they just came back and landed with the jump plane. But not if they froze in the doorway or outside with the aeroplane throttled back, just above the stall, and slowly losing height. A go-around for another drop was expensive!

At least that was my experience - may have been different at other sites.

The aspect of note here for me is not whether the old lady wanted to change her mind, but rather how badly her straps were done up.

I was suspicious, too, but no; there's more here.

Available elsewhere, too - e.g. Daily Telegraph site.

"Granny changes her mind about sky diving ..."
That's not quite the story as on the Daily Telegraph.
In the longer video on Dave's first link you can clearly see her strap is off her shoulder when sat next to the window, and when at the door his strap is pulling hers away from her shoulder. I wonder if she could feel the insecurity and tried to tell him.

Must be a fake. I can't believe that the instructor would be able to hang on to her at the point of rapid deceleration when the main chute opens.

That's my main thought. But it seems pretty genuine...odd.

I presume the harness, although displaced, is still supporting her.
